Applique textile picture - for Teddy

Well the gorgeous Teddy got his 'welcome new baby' picture at the ripe old age of 4 months old! I really enjoyed making this picture and thought I'd share the process with you, if you are interested in trying something like it your self.

The skills/materials used are:
- machine applique
- stash of fabrics - I've got plenty!
- using invisible stitching
- hand embroidery
- using 'doublesided' Bondaweb - holds fabric securely in place while you stitch around it
- fabric ink
- letter stamping kit - I use this one loads

1) The main picture of the elephant came from a Selvedge Magazine flyer. I drew the image to scale and then cut out each individual piece as a pattern piece. I choose my fabrics and attached Bondaweb to each piece, drew around the pattern piece and then ironed the pieces on to the elephant.

Ready for attaching to main fabric

2) I stitched the elephant to the main fabric using invisible stitch - taught to me by Quliter Dawn Cameron-Dicks. Here's the image from the reverse side.

3) I then added the other fabric pieces, which are only attached with Bondaweb, as the image is going to live behind glass, so did not need to be ultra secure.

4) Next I added some hand embroidery, using a range of stitches and matching tones. The picture was completed by the addition of flowers, circles cut from a gorgeous piece of fabric, which made the composition pleasing to my eye!

The only completed picture I have is a bit blurry....

Fancy homemade labels - I like! Will have a go...

Just browsing and I found this project for DIY labels. When I find some time I'm going to try something similar. They are gorgeous and cute - bespoke labels!

Basic printing with the kiddies!

Looking at the growing pile of saved polystyrene bases reminded me how much pizza we had eaten and also the need to use the bases for basic printing. Here's what we produced:
You need block print ink and at least 2 rollers -
one for ink and one dry for pressing the image onto paper

We were inspired by these pictures and this link.

Next year I plan to print and make my Christmas cards...bit late now!

A good place to buy the ink, roller and paper is Artrageous in Bristol. Have fun....x

Block Printing on fabric: Weeks 2,3 & 4

I've really enjoyed my birthday present - a block printing on fabric course at the creative Spike Print Studios, Bristol. Here's what I got up to:

I rushed this owl and when I looked back at him I saw that there was lots missing, so I went back and cut him again during week 2.
No feathers and no wings!

Week 3, I really had to sort this weird bird out...more cutting!

A Van Gogh sky..

I included a sponged on background..

The lino cut..

I used him to make a T-towel..

Then in the final week I decided that I had to simplify my motif. So in a 2 minute window before I left work to head for the course, I googled some feather images and came up with a peacock feather design.

Getting better...

Block printing on Fabric 1..an early birthday present

For my birthday present this year I wanted to go on this course and I managed to get a place. There are 6 of us on the course so plenty of time to talk through ideas and explore techniques.

The tutor Jacqui at Spike Print Studio has a good background in textile design and printing and is friendly, inspiring & supportive.

My lino cutting skills from the workshop at The Folk House came in handy as we use lino to cut our designs. We cut away and had a go at printing a sample.

Needless to say...I loved it! My mind bubbles with all the possibilities....
